The HGST Ultrastar HE8 delivers a hermetically sealed, helium-filled hard drive, the Ultrastar He8, designed for massive scale-out environments. The use of helium makes a significant difference. Helium has a density that is only one-seventh that of air. Replacing the air inside a hard drive with helium dramatically reduces the turbulence caused by the spinning disks, leading to lower power consumption and a lower operating temperature within the disk drive. The reduction in turbulence for the spinning disk allows HGST to incorporate a seven-disk design in a traditional 3.5-inch form factor.
